The Nawican Friendship Centre provides comprehensive, culturally grounded programs for Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members in Dawson Creek and the South Peace River District.

We offer a wide range of services including Elder programs, youth activities, family support, cultural programming, education and employment assistance, and counseling services. Our programs honor Indigenous cultures while welcoming everyone who seeks support, learning, and belonging.

For over 50 years, we have been a cornerstone of our community—a place where friendships are forged, cultures are celebrated, and lives are transformed.

A Nawican Story

Nfc about table (1)

“Nawican” is understood to be derived from the Cree language and reflects the idea of “I live there” or “a place to call home.” The name expresses a sense of belonging—a welcoming space where people come together in community, connection, and mutual support.

In 1966, a group of dedicated local volunteers recognized the need for such a place. Through grassroots efforts—fundraising with bingos and donations, visiting schools and surrounding communities, and building relationships—they helped establish what would become a vital hub for culture, connection, and care.

Our values

Here are the four values that guide everything we do to serve our community with respect and purpose.

We honor respect.

Every person who walks through our doors is valued and welcomed. We create spaces where Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members feel safe, heard, and respected. Our programs honor the dignity and worth of every individual, celebrating diversity while fostering genuine understanding across all cultures.

We celebrate cultural pride.

We preserve and celebrate Indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions as living, breathing gifts to be shared across generations. Our programs keep traditions alive while welcoming all people to learn, participate, and grow in their understanding. Cultural identity is at the heart of everything we do.

We empower our community.

We don’t just provide services—we create pathways for individuals and families to reach their full potential. Through education, support, and opportunities, we help community members build skills, find their voice, and become leaders. Empowerment means giving people the tools to shape their own futures.

We practice accountability.

We maintain the highest standards in everything we do, from program delivery to financial stewardship. Our community trusts us, and we honor that trust through transparency, cultural appropriateness, and a commitment to meaningful outcomes. We measure our success by the real impact we make in people’s lives.
