Your time and talents help sustain our programs and services while giving you the opportunity to develop new skills, meet incredible people, and make a real difference in the lives of community members.

How to Become a Volunteer

In Person:
Drop by Nawican Friendship Centre during office hours to complete your volunteer application and discuss opportunities that match your interests.

By Email:

Volunteer Opportunities

Program Support

  • Youth Programs
    Support after-school activities, homework help, arts and crafts, sports, and recreational programming for young people.
  • Elder Programs
    Assist with Elder gatherings, transportation, cultural activities, and social events that honor our knowledge keepers.
  • Family Programs
    Help facilitate family events, workshops, recreational activities, and celebrations that strengthen family bonds.
  • Cultural Programs
    Support cultural workshops, language classes, traditional arts, ceremonies, and cultural events throughout the year.
  • Event Support & Planning
  • Event volunteers
    Help set up, run, and clean up community events, powwows, cultural celebrations, and fundraisers.
  • Event planning committees
    Join planning teams for major events and contribute your ideas, skills, and energy to create memorable community gatherings.
  • Fundraising support
    Assist with fundraising initiatives, special events, and campaigns that support Nawican’s programs and services.

Administrative & Operations

  • Office support
    Help with reception, data entry, filing, mailings, and general administrative tasks that keep our Centre running smoothly.
  • Technology support
    Assist with computers, social media, website updates, digital communications, and tech troubleshooting.
  • Facility maintenance
    Help with building improvements, gardening, cleaning, painting, and maintaining our welcoming space.

Skills-Based Volunteering

  • Share your professional expertise
    Offer your skills in areas like graphic design, photography, videography, writing, accounting, legal support, or other professional services.
  • Workshops and teaching
    Lead workshops or classes in areas where you have expertise—cooking, arts, fitness, technology, trades, or any skill you’d like to share.
  • Mentorship
    Mentor youth, young adults, or community members in your field of work or areas of life experience.

Community Outreach

  • Outreach and awareness
    Help spread the word about Nawican programs, represent us at community events, and connect people to services.
  • Translation and interpretation
    Provide language support for community members who need assistance communicating in English or Indigenous languages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can volunteer?

Anyone aged 14 and older who is committed to supporting our mission and community. We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds, ages, and skill levels—Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike.

Do I need experience to volunteer?

Not at all! We provide orientation, training, and ongoing support. Your willingness to learn and contribute is what matters most.

Can I volunteer as part of a group?
Yes! We welcome families, school groups, corporate teams, and community organizations who want to volunteer together. Contact us to discuss group volunteer opportunities.
How much time do I need to commit?
That’s up to you! We have opportunities ranging from one-time events to ongoing weekly commitments. Tell us your availability and we’ll find a good fit.
Can volunteering lead to employment?
While we can’t guarantee employment, some of our staff members started as volunteers. Volunteering is an excellent way to gain experience, demonstrate your skills, and learn about job opportunities.
Do students receive volunteer hours?
Yes! We provide documentation of volunteer hours for students who need them for school requirements or scholarship applications.
